The Orthodox Mission in Nigeria stands as a radiant expression of the spiritual and humanitarian witness of the ancient and apostolic Church of Alexandria, which continues to serve as a beacon of Orthodoxy throughout the African continent. Guided by the hand of His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, a true missionary Primate and spiritual helmsman of the Alexandrian Church, the Orthodox presence in Nigeria is a living continuation of the apostolic tradition and evangelical labor that began in the early centuries of Christianity.
Under the canonical and pastoral care of the Holy Patriarchate of Alexandria, the Orthodox Archdiocese of Nigeria embraces a broad and dynamic mission: one that is spiritual and sacramental, but equally social, educational, and philanthropic in character. Its vision is not limited to ecclesiastical administration, but rather extends to the sanctification of the people, the upliftment of the suffering, and the cultivation of dignity and hope in countless communities across Nigeria.
A pivotal chapter in the life of the Nigerian Church was written by the late and ever-memorable Metropolitan Alexander (Gianniris), who served as the first Orthodox bishop and later Metropolitan of Nigeria. A man of profound dedication, spiritual stature, and missionary zeal, Metropolitan Alexander laid the foundational structures of the Orthodox presence in the country. Arriving at a time when the faithful were few and the challenges many, he labored untiringly for decades, establishing parishes, ordaining clergy and nurturing a local Orthodox identity rooted in faith, dignity, and love. His legacy remains alive in every corner of the Archdiocese.
Today, the mission continues with renewed strength under the leadership of His Eminence Archbishop Nikodemus of Nigeria, who, building upon this noble foundation, seeks to deepen and expand the spiritual and social outreach of the Church across the nation.
At the heart of this mission is a deep commitment to spiritual renewal, through the Divine Liturgy, the Holy Mysteries, catechesis, and the proclamation of the Gospel in multiple languages and cultural settings. In remote areas, in village chapels, and in urban parishes alike, the Church offers the healing word of Christ and the unbroken tradition of Orthodox faith.
Equally vital is the pastoral and social outreach of the Archdiocese. Through organized visits, personal accompaniment, and institutional initiatives, the Church reaches out to the vulnerable and the marginalized: to children without access to education, to families in poverty, to the sick, the elderly, and those living in neglected corners of society. In places where clean water and electricity are often scarce, the Orthodox Church becomes a wellspring of compassion and practical assistance.
The Archdiocese has also given significant attention to educational development, supporting the schooling of children, the training of clergy and lay leaders, and the provision of vocational opportunities. Seminaries, catechetical programs, literacy projects, and skill-building centers are among the fruits of these efforts. Through such means, the Church seeks to build not only faithful communities, but also informed, responsible, and hopeful citizens.
Philanthropy lies at the heart of the Archdiocese’s presence. Thanks to the efforts of benefactors and volunteers, local and international, the Orthodox Church in Nigeria operates with a strong emphasis on charity and service. From food distribution to medical aid, from youth support to housing renovations, the Church extends the hand of mercy wherever there is need. It does so without discrimination, seeing the face of Christ in every human being.
A particularly historic dimension of the mission is the enduring presence and contribution of the Greek community in Nigeria. From the early decades of the 20th century, Greek pioneers established themselves in Lagos and beyond, not only as successful entrepreneurs and industrious professionals, but also as devout Orthodox Christians and generous supporters of the Church. Their commitment, hospitality, and sense of duty laid the foundations for the Orthodox presence in Nigeria as we know it today.
The Greek diaspora in Lagos, together with other Orthodox faithful, Nigerians, Arabs, Eastern Europeans and others, continue to offer their talents, resources, and love in support of the Church’s mission. Their legacy is interwoven with the very fabric of Orthodox life in Nigeria, and their support remains a cornerstone of the Archdiocese’s strength and continuity.
Today, the Orthodox Mission in Nigeria moves forward with renewed vigor, under the pastoral guidance of Archbishop Nikodemus, the blessing of the Patriarchate, the prayers of the saints, and the cooperation of all who believe in the sanctity of this work. Orthodoxy in Nigeria continues to flourish: as faith, as hope, and as a living testimony to the love of Christ in Africa.
With heartfelt gratitude,
